The Living World
NCERT Line-by-Line Breakdown for NEET 2026
Unit 1: Diversity in Living WorldWelcome to the first chapter of your NEET journey! According to the official syllabus, this chapter forms the foundation of Biology. We will decode “What is living?”, understand Biodiversity, and master the rules of Nomenclature and Taxonomy. Let’s dive in!
1. What is Living?
The syllabus begins by asking “What is living?”. To define a living organism, we look for distinctive characteristics. However, not all features are defining properties.
🔍 The Twin Characteristics of Growth
Growth is defined by two factors:
1. Increase in Mass
2. Increase in Number of individuals
A. Defining vs. Non-Defining Properties
| Character | Defining Property? | Reason / Exception |
|---|---|---|
| Growth | NO | Non-living objects (mountains, sand dunes) also grow by accumulation of material on the surface (Extrinsic growth). |
| Reproduction | NO | Many living organisms do not reproduce (Mules, Sterile worker bees, Infertile human couples). |
| Metabolism | YES | The sum total of all chemical reactions occurring in our body. No non-living object exhibits metabolism. |
| Consciousness | YES | Ability to sense surroundings and respond to stimuli. It is the most technically complicated feature. |
2. Biodiversity & Taxonomy
Biodiversity refers to the number and types of organisms present on earth (1.7 to 1.8 million species described). To manage this huge number, we need Classification.
Taxonomy
The process of classification based on external and internal structure, cell structure, development process, and ecological information.
The 4 Pillars:- Characterisation
- Identification
- Classification
- Nomenclature
Systematics
Derived from Latin word ‘systema’ (systematic arrangement). It includes Taxonomy + Evolutionary Relationships (Phylogeny).
Book: “Systema Naturae” by Linnaeus.
3. Binomial Nomenclature
Given by Carolus Linnaeus. Each name has two components: the Generic name and the Specific epithet.
📜 Universal Rules of Nomenclature
- ✅ Latin Origin: Biological names are generally in Latin and written in italics.
- ✅ Two Words: The first word represents the Genus, the second denotes the Species.
- ✅ Handwriting Rule: When handwritten, both words are underlined separately. When printed, they are in italics.
- ✅ Capitalization: Genus starts with a Capital letter; species starts with a small letter.
Example: Mangifera indica (Mango)
4. Taxonomical Hierarchy
Classification involves a hierarchy of steps where each step represents a rank or category. The collection of all categories is the Taxonomic Hierarchy.
💡 Mnemonic: Keep Pot Clean Or Family Gets Sick.

| Mango | Mangifera indica | Anacardiaceae | Sapindales |
| Wheat | Triticum aestivum | Poaceae | Poales |
